Simple Broken Rice

Delicious with fresh basil and stir-fried broccoli and mushrooms.


1 Tbsp sesame oil
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 tsp red pepper flakes (or more!)
1 Tbsp minced garlic
1 Tbsp grated ginger
1 onion, diced
1 carrot, grated
1/2 tsp sea salt
1 cup Purple Mountain Broken Rice
2 1/4 cups water
tamari, to taste


  1. Heat sesame oil in the pot you will cook the rice. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, red pepper, garlic and ginger. When fragrant, add onion and carrot. When onion is translucent, add sea salt, rice and water.
  2. Bring water to a boil, then cover with a cracked lid and simmer until all water is gone. About 45 min.
